How to Type Alt Codes on Windows
- Ensure Num Lock is ON on your numeric keypad.
- Press and hold down the ALT key (usually left Alt).
- Type the code on the NumPad (e.g. 3 for ♥).
- Release the ALT key to generate the glyph.

3-Digit vs 4-Digit Alt Codes
Codes without leading zero (e.g. Alt+248) call the legacy DOS OEM Code Page 437. Codes with a leading zero (e.g. Alt+0176) call the Windows ANSI Code Page 1252.

What is the Alt code for the degree symbol (°)?+
The standard Windows Alt code for the degree symbol is Alt + 0176 (or Alt + 248 on legacy DOS keyboards). Hold down Alt, type 0176 on the numeric keypad, and release Alt.
What is the Alt code for the heart symbol (♥)?+
The heart symbol is Alt + 3. Press and hold Alt, tap 3 on the numeric keypad, and release Alt.
What is the Alt code for the copyright (©) and trademark (™) signs?+
For copyright (©), hold Alt and type 0169. For trademark (™), hold Alt and type 0153. For registered trademark (®), hold Alt and type 0174.
Why don't Alt codes work with the number keys above the letters?+
Windows BIOS and keyboard controllers specifically assign Alt code keystroke intercepts to the scan codes generated by the 10-key numeric keypad (NumPad). The top number row sends different hardware scan codes and will not generate Alt codes.
